New Map Visualizes the New York City Skyline of 2020
There’s a glut of supertall buildings set to populate the Manhattan skyline in the next five years, and National Geographic has released a nifty new interactive map charting those developments.
There are 15 supertall buildings—any building that is taller than 984 feet—currently under construction, and another 19 have been proposed, the map reveals. The developments are concentrated in two particular areas: the Financial District and Midtown.
Supertall buildings currently under construction in the downtown area are the 780-feet tall 50 West Street with a scheduled completion in 2017, Three World Trade Center with a scheduled completion in 2018, 30 Park Place , which will finish construction this year as will the “Jenga Tower,” 56 Leonard Street, just a few blocks away.
Among the proposed new structures, 125 Greenwich Street stands the tallest at 1,356 feet and currently has a projected finish date sometime in 2018. In Midtown, three skyscrapers are currently under construction as part of the Hudson Yards complex, and there are seven under construction between 50th and 60th Streets, the tallest of them also being the second tallest building in the city: The Central Park Tower, which will stand 1,550 feet tall, with a completion date sometime in 2019.
