Cool Design: Luxury Floating Home With Submerged Bedroom
Part of the allure of the floating home is its apparent serenity, and this model, moored on Amsterdam’s river Amstel, is peak “zenergy.” Designed by local firm +31 Architects, this home is more villa than boathouse, with 200 square meters (over 2,150 square feet) of clean-lined, open-plan interior space. Like a yacht, Watervilla Weesperzijde has a submerged lower level—with bedrooms and baths—and a sunlight-filled upper floor, which holds the living and dining rooms and kitchen. Glass balustrades on the stair connecting the two, as well as broad glass windows overlooking the Amstel, were, according to Dezeen, meant to help the occupants feel like “they were on holiday.”
