Buy Of A Lifetime? With A Starting Bid of $0, The Largest House In The State Hits The Auction Block
Known as “The Guitar House” and touted as Alabama’s biggest estate, 7 Montagel Way is the dream home of Larry House, the former CEO of MedPartners, a healthcare staffing firm. House resigned his position in 1998, right before the company was sued by its shareholders. This happened around the same time that House settled a costly divorce.
Though the 27-acre estate was sold by another auction house in 2003, a spokesperson explains that House “put the home up for auction and it was purchased by a bank, which he then bought it back from.” The house was sold for a reported $3.95 million at the 2003 auction.
The private auction on October 31 is in collaboration with DeCaro Luxury Real Estate Auctions, and the bidding will start at $0. The auction house describes the property as “the buy of a lifetime.”

Welcome to Birmingham’s 50,000-square-foot Guitar House. Auctioned in 2003 for $3.95 million, the home was listed in 2011 for $17.9 million.
By early 2015, the listing price fell to $9.9 million.
Architect Bill Sheppard modeled the design after historic castles in Italy and France. As you walk through the foyer, don’t forget to look up.
The house has 15 bedrooms and 22 bathrooms.
The first floor of the Southern palace is separated into his and hers master wings. Each wing includes a bedroom, bathroom, walk-in closet, and sitting room.
Feel free to bypass the elegant stairway — there’s a commercial-grade elevator.
House poured a reported $30 million into the home, installing a huge wine room and a 25-seat home theater with a 170-inch screen, stage, and old-fashioned box office.
House says the home’s drapes cost upwards of $400,000, as did the custom carpets.
Traces of 24 karat gold leaf can be found throughout the mansion.
Guitar House is a 30-minute drive from the airport. Its gated community, Shoal Creek, is also home to an impressive, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course.
Between the golf course, the stately office, and this billiards room, the estate makes for an excellent space to entertain business guests. There’s also a commercial office space on the home’s lower level.
A detached, 3,000-square-foot caretaker’s house has two bedrooms, two baths, two offices, a workshop, and a two-car garage. The main home’s nine-car garage can fit up to 12 vehicles.
With a riding arena, two pastures, and a six-stall barn with a lofted apartment, this is also an equestrian estate.
The grounds include an oval pool with dual cabanas and that legendary guitar-shaped driveway.
House says the driveway was inspired by Andrew Jackson’s home, The Hermitage, in Nashville, Tennessee.
